The Special Arts Ensemble

Join Our Team for the 22nd Annual Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization’s Buddy Walk

Buddy Walk 2015

The entire school, family, and friends are invited to join our team for the 22nd Annual Buddy Walk. This is a very worthwhile event as it is to raise funds for Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization.  Our team is called “Buddies STEP UP” and you can participate in the walk or make a donation on the team’s behalf.  There will be a t-shirt for purchase for $15.

Our very own Special Arts Ensemble will again open the Walk with their performance of a medley from the musical Hairspray.  The Dancer’s Edge Company will be walking in support of our Special Arts and Dance Movement students.

This is the Dancer’s Edge Company’s 3rd Season for raising funds and walking for the Buddy Walk.  We hope you will consider donating in addition to purchasing the t-shirt and walking.  Any amount will help and is wonderful.

As you may know, Southern Dance Theatre has offered a class for special needs students since our inception in 1983.  Our Special Arts Ensemble has performed for this event for over 12 years now.  In 2014, we put a team of walkers together, along with The Dancer’s Edge Company, to get them involved in a charity that was community based and impacted dancers, at their home studio, as well.  Our hope is that parents, families, and friends will join our team in making this a great SDT event!

Registration before October 3rd is $15.00/ $20.00 after.  Students are $10.

Sign up to join our team “Buddies STEP UP” or donate by clicking here. Students enter Promo Code BW16.

Breakfast, T-shirts, Live Entertainment, Pony Rides, Carnival Games, Dunk Tank, Bounce Houses, Rock Wall, Raffles, and much more!! There is something for everyone, walking or not!

The Buddy Walk will be held on Sunday, October 16th, 2016.

Buddy Walk Funding Provided Free Art Classes This Summer

We have heard from the Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization that they have used the funding raised by The Dancer’s Alchemy during the 2015 Buddy Walk to provide free art classes for local adults this summer. The class has been so popular that they will continue to offer it during the fall and beyond! The participants have really enjoyed the class.

Thank you to all of the Southern Dance Theatre and Dancer’s Edge Company families and students who participated to make this event and the class for these students such a success.

You may see some familiar faces in the photos below, some of our Dance Movement students and members of the Special Arts Ensemble enjoyed their time painting this summer.

“Becoming Bulletproof” with Zachary Gottsagen

Southern dance Theatre is proud to announce that our student and Special Arts Ensemble member, Zachary Gottsagen, has been on tour promoting his new film “Becoming Bulletproof”. He has been attending opening premiers in the following cities. Los Angeles, Washington, DC. New York City, Boston, Portland, Seattle and Cleveland.

Zac in Baseball uniformZac has had to miss a few of his Dance Movement classes for this adventure, but is a good student and will have no problem rejoining his class when he returns from filming for HBO in North Carolina. This new film was written for him and he will have the lead role! We don’t have a name for the new film, but we are happy to support him in his acting career. Way to go Zac!

Make a Difference – Join Dance Buddies STEP UP!

In recent years, the Special Arts Ensemble has performed during the opening ceremony for the Gold Coast Down Syndrome Association’s Annual “Buddy Walk”. This event raises funds for the organization’s educational, social, and advocacy programs in Palm Beach County and promotes awareness of the capabilities and talents of persons with Down Syndrome.

We’ve decided to take our school’s involvement in this year’s 21st Annual Buddy Walk to the next level in order for the 2nd year in a row. Last year our team raised $1,200 and over 150 people joined Dance Buddies STEP UP! We’re hoping to go even bigger this year!

Dance Buddies STEP UP! 2014 Team

Thanks to Teresa Copeland Heller for the photograph!

We are opening the opportunity up to the entire school to get involved with our team, called Dance Buddies STEP UP, either by walking during the event or by making donations. The Dancer’s Edge Company will participate and walk in honor of our Special Arts Ensemble and Dance Movement Students.

This is a great opportunity for adults and children of all ages to get involved in a very important cause, one that is very dear to our hearts here at Southern Dance Theatre.

We are hoping Team Dance Buddies – STEP UP will make a great impact!

About the Buddy Walk

The Buddy Walk, a Family Fun Event, features a one mile walk, free breakfast, multiple children’s activities, live entertainment, dj and dancing, characters and a silent auction and raffle. In 2014, nearly 3000 people participated in the Buddy Walk and raised over $180,000. Typical attendees are suburban families.

About Gold Coast Down Syndrome Organization For 35 years, Gold Coast has been serving the families of children with Down syndrome in Palm Beach County. We offer education, advocacy and support programs including The Learning Program, Exceptional Educators, Smart Start, Tunes for Tots and the Next Chapter Book Club. The Buddy Walk funds the majority of our work and made possible the opening of our Resource Center in 2012. Gold Coast is a Founder of the Buddy Walk and one of only three groups nationally that have continually held walks for 21 years.

About Down Syndrome

Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome.

More than 400,000 Americans are living with Down syndrome. With quality education and family and community support, people with Down syndrome will develop their full potential and enjoy meaningful lives.
