Roger Dunson Jr has recently returned to Palm Beach county to rejoin the theatre and dance world of South Florida. While living in New York City, Roger continued his dance education, studying Simonson technique at Dance New Amsterdam, Horton technique at The Ailey Extension, musical theatre with Jeff Shade at Steps, and jazz with Frank Hatchett, Stephen Harding, and jazz legend Luigi.

Roger began his training in 1996 in Southern Dance Theatre’s open summer program. That fall, he became a scholarship student at Ballet Florida while also taking ballet, jazz, tap, and modern at Southern Dance Theatre. He soon joined the dance department at Atlantic High School led by Elizabeth Gonzales and competed for two years with the award winning Atlantic High School Eagle-ettes and Company under the direction of Gina Dicillo-Gelfand and Laura Comas. Following high school, Roger studied education, philosophy, and dance technique at Florida Atlantic University and Florida State University. He took part in programs at Palm Beach Ballet Center and Boca Ballet Theatre.

Penni Greenly coached Roger on dance education curriculum and added him to the Southern Dance Faculty in 2000. He taught guest classes and choreography for the Atlantic High School dance department from 1999-2004 and for the Boynton Beach High School dance department since 2005. He went on to receive multiple choreography awards for his work with the Dancer’s Edge Company, Atlantic High School Eagle-ettes and Co, Santaluces Chief-ettes, and the Fusion Force Dance Company. From 2000-2005, Roger directed X-10, a preprofessional dance workshop and performance group for local dancers. In 2006, Roger began training in modern dance under Demetrius Klein while teaching jazz at Klein Dance in Lake Worth.

Before moving to NYC, Roger taught Jazz 4 & 5 and directed the Dancer’s Edge Senior Company. He conceived and directed Southern Dance Theatre’s 2010 Recital “Cirque Hommage” and performed as a dancer in a local professional production of Kander & Ebb’s Cabaret.
